Herbs are the core of our face masks, hair masks and hair tea products. That’s because we believe that herbs serve a critical purpose in beauty products, especially when they aren’t coupled with harmful toxins. Herbs are nutrient rich and a great way to improve your overall health and to add a little oomph to your beauty regimen. So we’ve incorporated herb infused oils into our bath and body products. That’s right - the spring collections, Amour, Green Tea (Unisex), Naked (Unisex), Pink Champagne, are all blended with a nutrient rich lavender infused oil blend.
We all have our favorite beauty brands and places to shop; but the key to a successful product is the formula and the ingredients. The rise of natural, organic, non-toxic, and herbal beauty products is much more than a trend, it’s a lifestyle for many, including myself. The benefits of using products that are derived from natural ingredients is immeasurable. One of the primary reasons that I personally have adopted a regimen that is rich in natural ingredients is that it limits your interaction with toxic ingredients that are linked to cancer and other ailments – you know how I feel about toxins in products that are designed to make you beautiful. But most importantly, it’s because companies consistently manufacture synthetic ingredients to replicate the benefits of products that come from nature and I’m not down with that. For goodness sake, just give me the plant!
Herb infused oils is one of my favorite ways to incorporate herbs into your beauty regimen and it is possibly the most beneficial due to the way that the oils are derived. Infused herbs are a combination of carrier oils and herbs – that’s it. I say they’re the most beneficial because you’re combining all the benefits of the carrier oil and all the benefits of the herbs – it’s like a smorgasbord of nutrients.
Making Herb Infused Oils
There are a number of ways to infuse oils but the most common way is a heat infusion (either solar or direct heat). Since it’s early spring and Atlanta hasn’t transformed to HotLanta just yet, I decided to go with direct heat for products for the spring collection. I actually used a combination of direct heat methods. I used a slow cooker to slowly heat the oil and lavender and I also used a double boiler method. I was most interested in seeing if one method got a better result using the lavender. The double boiler method proved to be superior. Lavender is a very delicate herb that will burn quickly if the temperature exceeds a certain point. When I used the double boiler method I heated the oil and lavender in a mason jar until the oil was warm but not hot. Then I turned off the heat and let the lavender marinate in the hot but cooling oil. This gets all of the nutrients from the lavender without burning it. I stored the lavender and oil filled mason jars in a dark bag and shook it daily to get as many of the nutrients from the lavender into the oil as possible. I let the lavender soak in the oil for around 4 weeks. At the end of the 4 weeks, I strained the oil from the lavender and voila – a little jar of heaven.
So, why lavender infused oil? Well, why not. Lavender smells great, it’s beautiful and it has amazing medicinal qualities. Lavender is one of the most beneficial herbs. It’s the herb of all herbs and when you combine a herb with such amazing medicinal properties and steep it in oils that are great for repairing and moisturizing the skin, it’s a match made in heaven – hence my heaven in a jar reference.
Lavender Infused Oil Would be Nothing Without - the Oil
The oils in the lavender infused oil are jojoba, shea, sweet almond, safflower, and coconut oil. I of course chose these oils for a reason.
Jojoba oil is rich in vitamins and minerals that are good at balancing oil production in the skin, reducing wrinkles, reducing inflammation and ridding the skin of acne. It’s quite the powerhouse of carrier oils.
Shea Nut Oil
Shea nut oil is high in vitamins and essentials acids that protect and nourish the skin and prevent the skin from drying out. It is also know to help the skin in collagen production.
Very hydrating oil that is high in vitamins and essentials acids that soothes irritation, rashes, and inflammation.
Sweet Almond Oil
Rich in vitamins and minerals that protect the skin from damage, moisturize, reduce inflammation, and prevent premature aging.
Light oil that is rich in vitamins and essential fatty acids that protect the skin from UV rays, enhance skin cell growth, and boost immunity.
Introducing the Real MVP - Lavender
The oils that make up the lavender infused oil blend provide amazing benefits through it vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acid. But the lavender herb is no wimp in this relationship. In fact – it’s the real MVP.
Lavender is Anti-Inflammatory
Lavender has antibacterial properties that rid the skin of bacteria and clean out your pores. This also brings about anti-inflammatory properties that are capable of calming the skin and reducing swelling associated with skin ailments such acne and reducing redness associated with rosacea.
Lavender for Anti-Aging
Antioxidants help improve the look of your skin by eliminating free radicals which cause the skin to look dry and dull. Once dead skin cells are eliminated your skin is able to produce new, healthy skin cells that can protect your skin against the culprits. This is what helps reduce the signs of aging in the skin.
Lavender is a Decongestant
Spring is hell for allergy sufferers. The anti-inflammatory benefits of lavender can help relieve sinus pressure and congestion.
Lavender to Reduce Blemishes
While reducing inflammation, the appearance of redness, blotchiness, and discoloration may also improve.
